Can Strattera cause rapid heart beat and chest pains? |
[Edit] |
Answer
I feel that i have a rapid heart rate on Strattera but no chest pain. My doctor felt that it was due to anxiety and not the drug but i experience this symptom when i am relaxed not stressed. The drug is such a life saver for me that right now i am putting up with it.

I have been on 80mg of Strattera forabout 6 weeks. I do a lot of bike riding on the road and noticed that I have a harder time climbing hills. My heart rate increases rapidly when going up small or large hills and as a result I do not have the same stamina I did prior to taking Strattera. I do not have chest pains, however, my leg muscles hurt more than usual.

I have been on Strattera for 6 mos and rapid heart beat is the only side effect that I have. I do not have any chest pain and there is no connection with activity level and instances of rapid heart beat. It seems very random actually. My Dr. said it is not a concern as long as it does not annoy me too much but I do worry that it may be causing a problem. Has anyone talked to a Dr. or specialist to find out if this really is just a "minor annoyance" or a real issue?
Answer
Our son, 12, who is ADHD has had some erratic situations where his heart rate seems to run wild. On two prior occasions, the Doctor attributed it to too much caffeine. We essentially removed caffeine from his diet and he went for some time without reporting the rapid heart beat symptoms.
Today, having been on Strattera for about one week (this time), he came in from play, ran up the stairs and complained of the rapid heart beat again. This time no caffeiene in diet. In all cases he has been taking Strattera when the rapid heart beat occurs.
This is leading us to think that Strattera is at least a contributor to the rapid heart beat issue. Our son has experienced no pain and it does not seem to slow him down much.

My daughter has been taking Strattera for two years now... she has poor appetite, is moody (was moody before) and started about a month ago complaining that her heart feels like it's "pounding hard" and makes it "hard to breath" - I have noted that this situation is continuing either more often or is simply more noticeable to her. She is very worried about it and I have made an appointment for her physical next week to see what if anything the doctor has to say.
Going for more research!

Hello. I am a 24 year-old male. I have been taking Strattera for almost a month now. It seems like it is helping to keep my ADD at bay, as I feel more focussed and am noticably more capable of following along during a conversation or meeting. However, I too am experiencing the rapid heartbeat and pounding feeling in my chest. It usually lasts about 2 hours and is not overwhelmingly disabling. I plan on infoming my physician at my follow-up appointment, though for now I suppose I will just deal with it since it seems to be having some positive effect.
