Eating a casual dinner you use the fork in your left hand and your knife in the right hand (for cutting meat or solid vegetables.) When not using your knife lay it on the side of your plate until you need it again. When finished eating (even if there is still a small bit of food remaining on your plate) lay the fork in the middle of the plate sideways and put the knife on top going the opposite way. This means you are finished eating. Do this at home or out at friends for dinner because you may go to a high end restaurant where you will need to know proper etiquette.
