Is Barrett an Irish name?

[Edit]

Answer

Barrett Possibly (Middle English) "dispute, argument", (Old French) "cap", or (Old German) "bear-strength." Transferred use of the surname, used as a given name mostly in the 19th century, probably due to the fame of English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Some think it originates form the german root word "ber" (bear). It is a common surname, and is popular as a first name (in the top 1000 list for US names, 2006). Another celebrity with this name is Barrett Strong, a famous Motown singer and song writer.
