A new rider can handle a sport bike, but s/he needs to be carefull. There are several sport bikes that a new rider is capable of controling. The best new bike off the show room floor for a new rider is Yamaha's yzf600r. It is considered a sport touring bike now I believe but has plenty of pure sport to it. Good used sport bikes for new riders are the Yamaha fzr600, fzr400, Suzuki Katana, Older Honda CBR's (f1, f2, Maybe f3). The most important thing to to ride with respect for your machine. A handfull of throtle on a sport bike will get you into a 100 MPH world of hurt very quickly, but they are arguably the most exciting bikes available, so just ride carefully, take a class, and keep the rubber side down.

It depends on the person. I am 19 and my first bike was a sport bike. I bought my bike when I was 18. But I knew I could handle it because I had raced motocross. As I tell all my friends... Learn in the dirt, it doesn't hurt as much! If you learn how to ride a dirt bike or a four-wheeler before you get a street bike, you learn leaning, balance, and clutch control. Get what you feel comfortable with. Just remember. Speed is addicting, tickets are expensive!
