Should suicide be a criminal offence? |
[Edit] |
Answer
I wouldn't think so. How could you send a person to trial or jail if they successful.
Answer
"Attempted suicide" or "assisting suicide" are probably the more practical charges to consider. There was once a concern that persons who stood to gain as beneficiaries from an individual`s will or insurance plan might seek to counsel a family member into ending their own life, when that family member was in a vulnerable frame of mind. For that reason assisting suicide was looked upon as the ultimate form of undue influence.
The other arguments are largely moralistic questions as to whether the state has a legitimate right in preserving human life, to the point that it is legally superior to the purported right of each individual to die.
