What animals do you get rabies from? In: Animal Life |
[Edit] |
Many wild animals can carry rabies and it is especially noted in skunks, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes. Even domestic breeds of dogs and cats that have gone feral can very easily be suffering from rabies or carrying it without showing the symptoms. Don't take unnecessary risks by handling wildlife or other animals if you are not sure of their origin. Avoid any wild animal that is injured or seems to be sick, disoriented, or lethargic. If you see a wild animal behaving strangely, observe it from a safe distance and call Animal Control to remove the possibly affected animal.
In Europe the primary carriers are foxes, in Africa the primary carriers are jackals, and in Asia primary characters include asian dogs and the mongoose.
Rabies is rarely found in smaller mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, rats, and opossums. Domestic animals account for less than 10% of all cases in the United States.
