a check valve permits fluid flow in one direction, but blocks flow in the opposite direction. works as a vent, as overpressure or backpressure protection, or as an aid to a reprocationg pump or a cycling pump or servo-driven piston

Simplified, it lets gas (air) or liquid go one way, but not the other. The valves of your heart are a good example of this.
