Friend Codes are numerical codes that serve to regulate who can randomly contact you. This is primarily a source of protection for younger audiences, though these codes are commonly considered somewhat pointless among older audiences and indeed more of an annoyance than anything else. These codes are used on Nintendo devices such as the DS and Wii.
It is worthwhile to note that not all games use only friend codes as a matching service and additionally use a random matchmaking service as an alternative to only using Friend Codes.
