What are some big celebrations in Scotland?

[Edit]

Hogmanay (New Year's Eve). First Footing (after the New Year bells) when somebody - traditionally a handsome man - is the first person to visit a house after midnight, carrying a piece of coal, traditional foods, and whisky. For some reason, the lassies look forward to this visit.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Dates variable, this year in August.

The Braemar Gathering (Highland Games) - first Saturday in September.

Halloween (the eve of All Hallows Day) - December 31.

The Glasgow Fair - end of July.

There are plenty of other festivals, the Scots not being folk to let the chance of a drink and a dance go by.
