When you are in the water your bones are very weak, while you are in the pool, and for sometime afterward (notice your pruning skin) because of the water saturation. My friend was in the pool playing volleyball and her finger got caught in the arm of someones tank top and it ripped her finger right off because of it. Another disadvantage is that if you are swimming laps on a daily basis you can get overuse injuries (in the shoulders especially). I have chronic tendonitis in my shoulders from years of swimming. If you are swimming for weight loss it is harder if the pool is your only exercise. Make sure you stretch and cross train with other strokes and forms of exercise. It is harder to burn fat in the water because your body doesn't heat up as it does on land.
The only disadvantages of swimming are that it can cause shoulder and knee prblems if you are not careful
