Ultimately, it is a literal interpretation of a particular Creation Myth, of which there are dozens, depending on the culture. As far as reasoning and evidence are concerned, there are no "main ideas". Creationism stems purely from an ignorance of modern science.

The Main Ideas in Creationism are that God Created The Heavens and The Earth ( We did not come from organisms or monkeys). Also, that God sent his son Jesus to earth to teach and love the people and then to die on the Cross for all the sins of all people. According to the teachings of Paul in the bible, those who accept this as true and give their Life to Him will spend eternal life in heaven and those who do not will spend their eternity "Elsewhere".

Although "Creationism" is associated, particularly in the US, with Christianity many religions have Creation myths; for example, in Hinduism one story is that before the Earth or Heaven there was a vast ocean with a giant cobra floating on the surface. Lord Vishnu slept within the coils of the Cobra. A humming came from below and Vishnu awoke. From Vishnu's navel grew a magnificent lotus flower. In the middle of the blossom sat Vishnu's servant, Brahma. He awaited the Lord's command.

Vishnu spoke to his servant: 'It is time to begin.' Brahma bowed. Vishnu commanded: 'Create the world.'

In the time before time, God was. And when God wants to create something, all he needs to say is "Be", and it becomes. So it was that God created the world and the heavens. He made all the creatures, which walk, swim. Crawl and fly on the face of the earth. He made the angels, and the sun, moon and the stars to dwell in the universe.

Over the years as new religions come into being, many - probably hundreds - of creation stories grow alongside them. All, it can be argued, are equally valid and many are beautifully imagined - the Hindu one in particular is worth searching out.
