The overall theme in MacBeth is deception because nothing is ever as it seems. The witches say "fair is foul, and foul is fair," and MacBeth pretends to be a good guy while secretly scheming to kill the king, Duncan. He then must deceive all of Scotland when he becomes king. MacDuff does not fall for it and creates an army to fight against MacBeth and eventually beheads him.
