What are tourist suggestions for Egypt?

Westerners have been visiting Egypt for centuries, but it's still an exotic destination, with all the pros and cons that go along with that. Some people also feel especially sensitive about trips to an Arab country in the current political climate. Here are some suggestions that have been contributed:

  • Be careful with your credit card. Mine was billed by a restaurant after I left Egypt for about 20 times the value of the meal. Real hassle getting credited by Visa.

  • Make sure you go to King Tut's burial chamber, then to Cairo and see what the treasures that were in it with him. Amazing!

  • Egypt is a wonderful country to visit - I went in May 2004. The Egyptians are very friendly. I stayed in Giza at the Intercontinental Pyramid Hotel, which is 5 mins from the Pyramids - a must see (but take a torch as we got stuck at the bottom of the Kings burial chamber when the lights failed - just my luck). [Note for Americans who are picturing explorers with torches: the English call a flashlight a "torch".] We got a taxi from the hotel, who waited for us and brought us back - really cheap. We also got a taxi to Cairo to visit the museum. We then flew to Sharm EL Sheikh and stayed at the Sheraton Sharm Hotel, which I will recommend 100%. The Sheraton Sharm hotel is absolutely wonderful. We stayed in a hotel room (rather than the resort), which I would totally recommend for the ease of getting around. The room was huge, with a separate lounge/tv area, huge balcony and huge bathroom. We even had a lovely chocolate cake left for us! The beach (you cannot walk into the sea due to coral - you have to go in at the end of a jetty) and pools - we found 4! are wonderful and in May the hotel was only half full so plenty of room. The Italian tour reps were noisy at certain periods of the day but if you didnt want to join in then they left you alone. If you did want to join in, they made every effort to explain everything in English too. We went B+B, which I would recommend as the Italian and Lebanese restaurants were gorgeous and so cheap - we only spent ?400 in 14 nights for lunch and dinner. Lastly, we learnt to dive at Aquarius, which are based on the beach at the Sheraton. Our instructor was so helpful and understanding - we were the only ones on the PADI course so it really was one on one. Love Egypt - go! (English reviewer)

  • Don't drink the water. Buy bottled.

  • I lived in Egypt for around 4 years and have been back several times since then. I just lived there around 3 years ago and just went back this past April! Pyramids, obviously, are a must see! Be careful of the beggars and people trying to sell things, the postcards they sell are a rip-off and careful when going to ride a camel because they sometimes might take you into the desert and demand more money, harmless really, but be cautious. Sharm El-Sheikh is beautiful. Beaches, nightlife, snorkeling and diving, etc. Don't stay by Na'ama Bay unless you love night life and crowds because it can be loud and the beaches aren't very nice there if they are like the Movenpick that is located right on the Boardwalk. Hotels that are farther from the Boardwalk are nicer but also have hotel shuttles to get you places. Taxis are recommended too, realllly cheap! Luxor is a really neat historical place. Valley of the Kings and Queens, King Tut's Tomb...all that. Bring lots of water, it gets really hot out in the desert while site-seeing here. Nile River Cruise is what many people do while they go to visit Egypt. It takes you from Cairo to Luxor or elsewhere dependening on the cruise you choose. Felluca Ride is on the Nile River, they are pretty cheap to ride these sail boats and it gives an experience that you won't forget! It's great!

  • Some Tips: If you give money to one kid, you'll be giving it to all of them. Bring plenty of water wherever you go. Have alot of extra "baksheesh" which is tip money, for all the little things you may need it for! Learn the word "no"-la'a and "thank you"-shokran!. You'll need that!
