I have always considered this question a "Mind Game" but from my perspective it had to be the hen's ancestor (came first) that laid the egg that begat the hen. 8-)

The hen had to have either two ancestors or it evolved from another animal. Nothing appears out of the blue. If none of these fit your question then the hen came first because the egg needs to have incubation in order for it to hatch.
