Basic Chord Theory
The basic chords in composition are the I, IV, and V7 chords. In the key of G, that would be G, C, and D7. The numbers can be reached by numbering each of the notes in the scale of the key you are using. Other chords can be added but a lot of songs can be played using this basic pattern. Usually the song ends using the V7 to I chord as a resolution.
If you write a song using this basic construction you can go back later as you learn more chords and add them at strategic points in the song.
