What chords can be used in composing a song in a single root key?

In: Music
[Edit]

Basic Chord Theory

The basic chords in composition are the I, IV, and V7 chords. In the key of G, that would be G, C, and D7. The numbers can be reached by numbering each of the notes in the scale of the key you are using. Other chords can be added but a lot of songs can be played using this basic pattern. Usually the song ends using the V7 to I chord as a resolution.

If you write a song using this basic construction you can go back later as you learn more chords and add them at strategic points in the song.

I hope this answered the question. There is a lot more to chord theory than this, but this information is the basic information that Western music is based on.

I will keep an eye on this question to see if I can help any more.
