What do you say to parents in the death of a friend?

[Edit]

Speaking as a parent who recently lost a son, the best way to approach the parents is a simple hug and the mention of something you adored about that person.

Tell them you are sorry about their loss and give them a card and a hug. Give them a big bouquet of flowers, sit down with them, and share the memories you and their son/daughter had together.
