What does 'Japan' mean? In: Name Origins, Japan |
[Edit] |
Answer
In Japanese, "Japan" is normally written in "Kanji" (Ideogram symbols). It is two symbols, Ni and Pon, and pronounced "Nippon" (knee-pown). The first symbol means "sun" and the second means "to rise". So Japan means "the land of the rising sun", because the sun rises there in the morning first in Asia.

The second kanji (the "pon" or "hon" kanji) actually means 'the origin' or 'the basis of'. Thus, Japan actually means "The origin of the sun".
