It means that people within the group started to disagree with one another. There was a division of thought. This is something that can cause discord and weakness within the group. It states in the Bible, "A house divided can not stand." In order for a group to experience success, they must be of one mind, one purpose. In other words, there must be mutual respect, with a common cause.
