What does A gift of oranges mean?

During the time of the Great depression in America, food was scare and rations were distributed. For people who did not live right where orange trees were-oranges were something that was hard to come by. People whould give oranges as a present because it was a treat, it was special and had value and meaning to the reciever. Oranges still are given as a gift today, partly as trandition and because people thought that was a great gift if they got oranges.
