What does MS stand for on cruise ships? In: Maritime History, Cruises |
[Edit] |
Answer
According to some people that work for a Cruise line, when a cruise ship has "MS" attached to the name it stands for Mail Service. There are some ships that have "RMS" on the name (Royal Mail Service). In other words, they carry mail to what ever destination the ship is heading for. I do not have hard evidence to back this up though.
Answer
Actually, M/S stands for "motor ship", M/V stands for "motor vessel" and S/S means "steam ship".
The Latter response is correct RMS on British ships refers to Royal Mail Service. MS = Motor ship. SS = Steam Ship.
In naval (military) usage USS is "United States Service"; HMS is "Her (His) Majesty's Service" etc.
