What does NFC and AFC stand for in football?

[Edit]
The AFC and NFC are NOT "similar to the American League and National League in Major League Baseball". The AFC and NFC champions do NOT play for a world chamionship, but for the NFL championship. There were only four World Championship games in the history of American Pro Football, after the 1966 through 1969 seasons, when the American Football League Champions played the NFL champions. Before and since those games, champions of the AFL, NFL, USFL, WFL, and others have erroneously declared themselves "World Champions", which implies that they played against other league champions and won. It's hard to have a "World Champion" when there's only one league! The AFC and NFC are merely conferences within the NFL, like East and West conferences in the NBA.

Answer

The NFC and AFC are the National Football League's conferences. NFC stands for National Football Conference and AFC stands for American Football Conference. It is similar to the American League and National League in Major League Baseball. The NFL's 32 teams are evenly divided into the two conferences. Each conference has its own playoffs at the end of the regular season to decide which teams will play in the Super Bowl, professional football's world championship game. In the Super Bowl, one NFC team and one AFC team play for the championship.

Answer

AFC - American Football Conference. NFC - National Football Conference.

Back in the 60's there were 2 different pro leagues, the AFL (American Football League)and the NFL (National Football League) some time during the late 60's they merged together and became one pro league.

Each conference AFC and NFC is divided up into 4 division so between the both of them there are 8 divisions.

NFC Divisions:

North - Green Bay, Minnesota, Chicago and Detroit.

South - Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Atlanta and Carolina.

East - Dallas, Washington, Philadelphia and NY Giants.

West - San Francisco, Seattle, Arizona and St. Louis.

AFC Divisions:

North - Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cinncinati and Baltimore.

South - Houston, Tennessee, Indianapolis and Jacksonville.

East - New England, Miami, NY Jets and Buffalo.

West: Oakland, San Deiago, Kansas City and Denver.

This is the way they were re aligned in 2001 to make the NFL more competitive.

Answer

THE AFC AND THE NFC ARE TWO CONFERENCES IN THE NFL THAT SPLIT THE 32 TEAMS IN THE NFL IN TWO SMALLER GROUPS OF 16 EACH TO MAKE FOR SIMPLER PLAYOFF AND SUPER BOWL MATCHUPS

Pro Bowl

The two conferences send their top players each year after the season is over to Hawaii to play in the Pro Bowl. This game is usually a fun affair to reward the best players in the league from that season in a game highlighting the best of the best from both the AFC and the NFC.
