What does a Lamictal rash look like? |
[Edit] |
Answer
I have added links to derm atlas for SJS and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which are the serious rashes to be aware of. I have also included a link with the symptoms of SJS/TEN. Not every rash is the serious rash they warn about, in fact the incidence is very rare.

Oddly enough, my psychiatrist, internist and psychologist did not know what the SJS rash would look like and recommended that I see a dermatologist. I saw the dermatologist and was told I had folliculitis, which is infected hair follicles. This did not sit comfortably with me since I had tiny, pus filled blisters sporadically from head to toe. I did not have a fever, or rash in my eyes, mouth, or palms of hands or on bottom of the feet as is the case with SJS. I then contacted, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) at 888-825-5249, the maker of Lamictal. I called GSK, described my rash, and they advised me to discontinue Lamictal after I advise my prescribing m.d., and they automatically had to file an Adverse Effect report with the FDA. Thankfully it's not SJS, but just a rash that GSK told me is a result of Lamictal but which can progress as a more serious rash. Go with your gut feeling like I did and call GSK today!

About a year ago I began to take Lamictal, about two weeks after, I discovered horribly itchy red bumps/rash all over my legs feet arms hands chest back and slightly on my face. It took a month for them to go away.

I started Lamictal about two months ago. I now have a rash on my face. It runs down each side of my nose and is starting to show-up on my neck. The rash on my neck started at about the size of a quarter and is spreading. It looked kinda? like ringworm at first. All of the rash is slightly red, with the top layer of skin dry and flaking. I?ll point it out to the doctor next visit. You can bet I?m keeping a close eye on it? which isn?t hard to do since it?s right there on my face.

The day after I took my first 25 mg pill, I developed a few patches of itchy skin on my sides and the backs of my legs. They were just mildly pink with no clear border and cleared up in a few days, after discontinuation of the pills.

Pre-blister rash: bright red with bumps and swelling. Extremely intense burning sensation like a bad sunburn.
My internist prescribed Lamictal for me January 2007 for an off label use. I used it for about 9 months. Right from the start I started to get rashes (as well as other odd side effects). The rashes always started on my hands and face but would extend to all of my skin on my whole body within 1/2 hour. Like hives but worse.
Tried all kinds of things to get rid of first Lamictal rash. I am prone to contact dermatitis but contact dermatitis is localized and itches only...does not burn. None of the normal things one does to get rid of a contact dermatitis rash worked on the Lamictal rash (i.e. it is not a normal rash). Only thing that worked was maximum allowed dose of benadryl.
Rashes would occur periodically during entire 9 months I took Lamictal at various different Lamictal dose levels. I had to carry benadryl with me always.
I never let my rashes get to the blister stage because I am a hypochondriac and the burning sensation was so painful (took benadryl until rash disappeared) although I am wondering now about some mouth blisters I would get every time I went to the dentist last year. Might they also have been caused by Lamictal? After I stopped taking Lamictal, I don't get the mouth blisters post dentist visits anymore. There seemed to be some kind of interaction between Lamictal and common ordinary foods I ate. For instance could not eat any citrus while taking Lamictal. I am thinking the mouth blisters were interaction between Lamictal & something my mouth came in contact with only at the dentist's (something not swallowed).
I actually stopped taking Lamictal because I could not afford the co-pays for it. After I stopped Lamictal, I realized it was causing rashes and the other unpleasant and worrying symptoms I had been having throughout 2007 which all disappeared within one month after stopping Lamictal. My doctor's office not aware of Lamictal causing rashes...I had to tell them it was the cause of my rashes last year.
This is one of my soap box/hobby horses...doctors don't know everything. I have learned it helps to be a hypochondriac even though it can be embarrassing. Pester your doctor. Get a second opinion. Do research on the internet. My mother was told she had colitis and what she really had was stage III ovarian cancer! Pester those doctors!
