The abbreviation BBQ could come from a ''phonetic translation'' of barbe-a-queue meaning beard to tail in French (read head-to-toe or top-to-bottom) as old style BBQs were effectively spit roasts and the carcass was literally skewered along it's length. But possibly this answer is untrue...
