The reliable historical records of the New Testament were written by eyewitnesses or those who spoke to eyewitnesses.
Briefly on the matter of supposed contradictions. These are all merely differences brought about by differences in knowledge literary skill of the authors etc. The major case that is made of them is found wanting when examined closely and fairly. We would have to throw out every other piece of ancient literature and for example refuse to believe in the existence of Julius Caesar if we subjected all documents to the same criteria.
