During the war, slaves fought on both sides-- many fought on the Union side for the sake of their freedom and others fought on the Confederate side because their masters forced them to.
Other slaves stayed at home on the plantations and took care of business as usual. By definition, only people with 40+ slaves couold count themselves as members of the planter class and only 2% of the Southern population owned slaves).

In virginia, stealing a slave would result in a prison sentence of 2 to 10 years. In Tennessee it was 5 to 15 years and in all the other states in the south, slave theft could result in the death penelty.

There were two types of slaves. 1) A household slave 2) Farmer slave.
Obviously a slave who worked in the house was given a bed and worked one on one with their masters. If slaves who worked in the crop fields were forced to work in the brutal weather and were beaten for not producing enough work.
Eventually Sectionalism in the states led to the Civil War. Most slaves fought for the union to fight for their freedom!
