The cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney helped lead to the civil war in the sense that it brought upon more salvery and slavery was a major issue in the fighting in the Civil War.

The Cotton Gin. Making cotton a very valuable cash crop that could finally be processed easily led to a stronger dependance on slavery. While it could be processed much faster and easier, it still had to be hand picked, thus slavery was a vital element to it's production.
