A 'hand shake' is a form of greeting someone. Men for centuries have shook hands and sometimes business deals were just a simple hand shake and no contract involved (that was many years ago.) Often men could tell from the hand shake they received if the man was honest, weak, or a good businessman.

Men usually never shook hands with women (because it was more masculine that feminine.) Up until the 1960's if a man was introduced to a woman she would be acknowledged by a nod and a smile and 'Very nice to meet you.' In earlier years men of stature would gently hold the woman's hand he was introduced to and kiss the top of her hand. Today many women have careers are in business, and slid into 'the man's world' so now shaking hands with a woman is acceptable.
