Answer
The abbreviation "Vet" has four meanings in American slang:
- A Doctor of Veternary Medicine (DVM). This is a doctor who practices on animals. There are two loosely defined groups of Veternarians: farm animal and pet. However, this is a loose classification, and vets may specialize in any animals. All Veternarians are trained in the treatment of a wide variety of animals in different Phyla. They charge a fair price for their services, and are not expected to care for animals for free, much in the way of a human doctor.
- Veterans. These are men who have served in America's Armed Forces.
- Another form of veteran or "vet" refers to someone who is very experienced, even if they haven't actually served in the military.
- Vet v. means to qualify, as in "I'll vet him and see if his references are real."
