What is the definition of oil used as painting media?

[Edit]

Answer

The 'oil' used in paint is used as the vehicle in which the pigment is mixed, forming a suspension of paint in the oil. By mixing, say, linseed oil with pigment which has been ground down to a very fine powder, one is able to produce a high quality oil paint as used by artists, enabling the artist to mix different colours and apply the paint to canvas. It dries slowly and to a hard, glossy finish. It takes at least 2 years for oil paint to finish curing properly, even though it is touch dry after just a few days or a week. Another type of oil commonly used by artists is poppy oil.
