Yes
ANSWER
NONchristians percentage is probably very large that believe this. Hell is not a punishment so much as it is a choice. With your father or without your father. When God is not present somewhere, it is hell. If you don't want him in your life, you are choosing this. Good and Decent does not get you to the Father. Jesus, his son does.
Jona's answer - Such amswer to me is rather simple. Would you consider this? My grandma was paralized for more than fourty years because of wrong treatment by a doctor. She was bed ridden in our home for 15 years. She died (as a unbeliever) soon after she saw her long lost son. She was a decent person in that she tried to raise her children to do good and abstain evil. She had many visit from Catholic fathers, monks, pastors but she never acknowledge to be a believer. I agree that nobody is good enough to deserve to be in the presence of God. But my question to you is would God allow this woman who suffered for more than 70 years on earth to suffer in hell (being apart from God as you stated) for a billion years???? Would not God forgive this woman if she for the first time repented when she met Him face to face? Would not God poured His love on her again and again and again to try to end her suffering or would God give up on her because she had her chances while she was living? Would the gate of heaven be closed for this woman when she finally realized what Christ had done for her? Would God turned His face away when one day in her eternal existence she broke down and cried out to God for His mercy?
I cannot imagine that God would turn this woman away because she already had her few chances in her life time to receive Him but for some reason did not. I cannot imagine that God would allow this woman and many others like her who suffered greatly in this life to continue to suffer in the next life and for eternity! I cannot imagine that God would stop loving, stop forgiving, stop calling His lost children to Him. An earthly father would wait a life time for his prodigal son to come home would not God wait an eternity time for His children to come home?
