Range will depend on ammo and choke. I would -NOT- hunt wild boar with a shotgun, rather would suggest you get a decent 30-30 or 30-06 which is a relatively high powered rifle -- or better.

I would also suggest carrying a sidearm with some knock down power - something like a Magnum .357 .41 or .44, or a .45 would be good.

Wild boar are some tough customers. Think of them as wild saber toothed pigs.
