A common lap pool is 25 yards long in the US and 25 meters internationally. particularly indoors, although 20 yards is still used in some parts of the US. Outdoor pools are often 50 meters in both the US and elsewhere.

Swimming competitions in the US are generally held in 25 yard pools in the winter (short course) and 50 meter pools in the summer (long course). Many colleges or well equipped facilities have pools that are 50 meters by 25 yards to accommodate training for both seasons. The same is true in outside the US except meters are used more often than yards.
