What organic molecules have been used in making paints? |
[Edit] |
Answer
With the exception of a small number of inorganic additives like titanium dioxide most of the contents of a modern paint will be organic.
Even the water based emulsions and low VOC paints are based primarily on organic chemistry, as they contain emulsifiiers, wetting agents, pigments and preservatives etc.
Taking a gloss paint as an example of paints in general; there will be a base solvent, perhaps xylene or toluene. To this will be added a resin usually some kind of alkyd. then emulsifiers and anti flocculating agents.
Finally a pigment will be added to produce the required colour and effect. The paint may be made opaque, pearlescent, metalic or transparent using organic compounds.
Googling the bold items above will take you to specific examples of these chemicals.
