Roosevelt and the Panama Canal
The main economic problem in the early 1900's were trusts. A trust is basically a large company that holds a monopoly on a product or service and uses that monopoly to force people and or other companies to do things. Teddy Roosevelt was know as the Trustbuster, because he 'busted' up many of the trusts of his time.
As for the Panama Canal there is a long story.
