Why do stores say you cannot shop barefoot?

[Edit]

Answer

The shop owners have been trained to believe there is a law against going without shoes. People in the United States are led to believe that there is some violation regarding going barefoot.

However, there are no "health codes", "fire codes", "insurance codes", "state codes", or "OSHA codes" regarding footwear in a place of business where there are no chemicals, hazardous waste, or something which could create serious harm.

This is verified by going to either www.pedolgroup.com or www.barefooters.org and looking at official documents stating this.

I own a small business. At first I thought this was a law, so I contacted my local health department. The health department stated there was no "health code", and submitted a letter in writing to me. Also, I spoke with my Farmers insurance, my small business insurance. They told me there are zero stipulations about having barefoot customers or employees. My rates do not go up if I allow barefoot people, and do not drop if I ban them.

Even with the "There could be glass" arguement, what stores actually sell items with glass? Baskin Robbins does not sell any glass products. Neither does Bank of America or your local McDonalds.

People by nature hate shoes. That is why flip flops became so popular. If people knew there were no health codes or insurance violations, they would go barefoot a bit more often. Think about it; if there was a health code violation and someone wore flip flops to buy their pizza, what food is in contact with someone's toes? Also, it is commonplace for a lady to stand at a counter or sit at a table and take one or both of their feet out of their shoes. When she does this, wouldn't the entire restaurant's food be contaminated? No one has ever gotten sick from this. People eat at home without shoes on, and have never been sick from it.

The bottom line is that most people believe there is a law, so they enfore it. If more businesses knew it was not a law, and that people preferred it, it would be more accepted.
